How to Measure Your Inseam

  1. Stand barefoot with your feet about 6 inches apart against a wall.
  2. Place a book spine-up firmly between your legs at the crotch — as a saddle would contact you.
  3. Mark the wall at the top of the book spine and measure from the floor to that mark.
  4. That measurement is your inseam. Use it in the calculator above.

The inseam measurement is the most reliable predictor of western saddle seat size. Height alone can be misleading because riders have different body proportions — a tall rider with short legs needs a different seat than a tall rider with long legs.

This calculator provides an estimated starting point based on common sizing relationships. Western saddle seat size is ultimately confirmed by sitting in the saddle — you should have a flat hand (one to two inches) of clearance between your thigh and the front of the seat jockey.
